An enthusiastic and well-qualified graduate is required to teach Spanish.
City of London School is an HMC independent day school of 1073 boys from 10 to 18. The school has a long-standing record of high academic achievement (95.16% A* to B grades at A Level in 2023). There is a busy schedule of co-curricular activities. In 1986 the school moved to its magnificent premises on a riverside site in the City. The Schools location next to the Millennium Footbridge takes in views of St Pauls Cathedral, the new Globe Theatre, Bankside Tate Modern Art Gallery and the River Thames from Tower Bridge to Westminster. However, perhaps the major joy of the school is the breadth of its ethnic, religious and social composition reflecting the cosmopolitan mix of modern London.
French is compulsory from the First to Third Forms (Years 7-9). Mandarin is compulsory (two lessons a week) in the First and Second Form. In the Third Form boys must choose three options from a range of subjects. It is at this stage that Spanish (and German) may be taken up. Russian is an option from the Fourth Form (Year 10).
French, German, Mandarin, Russian and Spanish are all taught to IGCSE (GCSE for Russian) and A-Level.
A minimum of one language is compulsory at IGCSE but large numbers take two. A considerable number manage to fit in three and even four is not unheard of.
The department moved to IGCSE (CIE board), with the first set of results in 2012. Russian candidates sit the Edexcel GCSE. All boys take their IGCSEs in the Fifth Form (Year 11), with the exception of the majority of the Russianists who sit IGCSE French in the Fourth Form (Year 10).
In the Sixth Form, pupils in French, German and Spanish sit the AQA A-Level. Russian candidates sit the Edexcel A-Level. In Mandarin, we have our own bespoke Sixth Form course; pupils work towards the HSK qualification and also take an EPQ related to some aspect of Chinese society or culture.
Facilities for the teaching of languages at the City of London School are generally excellent and resource funding is generous. We have ten classrooms each equipped with a screen and docking station for a laptop. The department is fortunate to have five language assistants (two French, one German, one Mandarin and one Spanish) to help with conversation practice. The assistants have their own large open-plan workspace. There are thirteen classroom teachers in the department, plus the five assistants.
Trips abroad form a significant part of the departments work. Recent trips have included a Sixth Form French trip to Lyon, a homestay visit to Angers for Third and Fourth Formers and a trip to Normandy for First Form; an exchange with Hamburg; Spanish trips to Granada, Seville and Madrid and a trip to China. The Russian Department has recently taken Russian-language trips to Estonia and Latvia.
There are a number of different societies, ranging from a Chinese Culture Club to a Modern Languages Film Society to a Linguistics Club, often run by older pupils.
It is a top priority for the School that we both attract and retain a staff body that is not only excellent, but also reflects the London community within which we live, and our diverse pupil body. As such, it is of paramount importance to the School that we acknowledge our current imbalance and seek to rectify this. We are therefore particularly keen to encourage applications from candidates who have African Caribbean, Asian or other Minority Ethnic or mixed heritage. All appointments are merit-based, following a fair, transparent recruitment process. In accordance with the Equality Act 2010, however, the School may employ positive action where diverse candidates demonstrate the ability to perform the role equally well.
City of London School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.
The City of London Corporation is currently undergoing a programme to ensure that our pay and reward practices are competitive and equitable across the whole organisation to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive in the work that we do.
